DESCRIPTION:
Alternative Rock LP Repressed This 1972 album continues the mostly-instrumental, jazz-rock thread of Zappa's work, which began with Hot Rats and continued with Waka / Jawaka. It's a big-band setting this time, with lots of improvisation, with big brass, woodwind and percussion sections. Sal marquez, in particular, shines on trumpet. Zappa-philes will also recognize names like Aynsley Dunbar, Don Preston and George Duke. The five lengthy tracks include the witty 'Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus,' the intricate title track, the rock-edged 'For Calvin (and his Next Two Hitch-Hikers)', and the more lyrical 'Blessed Relief.'

The Grand Wazoo is the eighth album by Frank Zappa and The Mothers. It was the second album Zappa had to record in a wheelchair following an on-stage assault in 1971, and it found the psychedelic jazz rock fusionist expanding his musical stamp with a bigger band dynamic. The music on the album is largely instrumental, following on from Hot Rats, Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Waka/Jawaka as another bold, bonkers excursion into the furrows of Zappa's highly creative mind. It's been some time since this gem was in print, and it's now comfortably resting into the chunky grooves of an 180 gm pressing, no less.

Last FM Information on Frank Zappa

Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, songwriter, guitarist, conductor, actor, satirist, filmmaker, and activist. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, he produced a wide range of music, including rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral, and musique concrète. He released more than 60 albums both with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist, often producing them himself. His work is noted for experimentation, improvisation, musical virtuosity, and satire of American culture. Zappa also directed films and music videos and designed album covers, and he is regarded as one of the most innovative and stylistically diverse musicians of his generation. Mostly self-taught, Zappa drew on a wide range of musical influences, including 20th-century classical music, African-American rhythm and blues, and doo-wop. He began writing classical compositions in high school while playing drums in rhythm-and-blues bands, later switching to electric guitar. His debut studio album with the Mothers of Invention, "Freak Out!" (1966), combined rock-and-roll songs with extended sound collages and satirical lyrics. He continued to blend diverse styles and experimentation throughout his career. Zappa developed a concept he called "Project/Object," in which musical ideas, phrases, and characters recur across albums. His lyrics often reflected his critical views on social and political structures, delivered with humor, and he is recognized as a pioneer of comedy rock. He was an outspoken critic of mainstream education and organized religion, and advocated for freedom of speech, self-education, political participation, and the elimination of censorship. He opposed recreational drug use while supporting its decriminalization and regulation. Zappa's music drew both acclaim and criticism: supporters praised its complexity, while some critics considered it lacking in emotional depth. He found significant commercial success internationally, particularly in Europe. Although he operated largely as an independent artist, he maintained distribution agreements with major record labels. Zappa remains an influential figure in contemporary music, and his honors include posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
