2x12" Tech, Minimal & Downbeat Electronica - Weval (Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers) are an Amsterdam-based duo who have established a solid reputation across the globe for crafting highly textured and sophisticated electronic music.
Pitchfork were quick to praise the talent of the duo, highlighting that the “fully-formed nature of their songwriting, sublime pacing and monolithically tasteful atmosphere is remarkable” in their 8.0 review for Weval’s self-titled debut album in 2016.
Since they first released their “Half Age” EP in 2014 on Michael Mayer’s legendary Cologne-based Kompakt label, Weval have strived to test and improve their songwriting abilities by incorporating their own vocals and live instrumentation into their recordings, adding an extra dimension to their already impressive sound and in 2019 they released their second album The Weight to critical acclaim. Remember is their third album, and will be released on Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour. The first single from the album, “Never Stay For Love”, features Dutch singer/songwriter, Eefje de Visser.
Ninja Tune off-shoot Technicolour has always dealt in interesting in-between sounds from the world of house and techno. Next to investigate that area is Amsterdam-based duo Weval aka Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers. Their new album finds them taking an expansive trip into high energy sounds that are tinged with nostalgia, rich in happy memories and laden with euphoric emotions that will take the dancefloor to a higher place. Part of that energy comes from tapping into the music of their collective youth and their various inspirations which lend this its widescreen sonic palette

Last FM Information on Weval
Please note the information is done on a artist keyword match and data is provided by LastFM.
Weval's name is derived from the Dutch word 'waterval', unsurprisingly translated as 'waterfall', and it's not too bad an attempt to sum up their work in mere semantics given the susurrus vibe of their sound; well perhaps if said waterall was made of rich, flowing treacle.
Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte are the brains behind the project who met whilst working in the film industry in 2010, and the young Dutch producers here have successfully crafted a sedated, deep sound that maybe one day the kids will label as heroin-step or something.
