2x12" 13 Tracks Of Soul, Deep House, Soulful House & Vocal House
Stay True Sounds supremo Allan Nicoll, aka Kid Fonque, and legendary UK producer Charles Webster have brought together the cream of the South African deep house scene for a unique album. The record was recorded at Flame Studios, a facility built inside a prison at Constitution Hill in South Africa, which is very significant to South Africans, because that's where the Constitution was written. “It's a remarkable institution,” says Charles. “Mandela was in there; you can really feel the history. You're working in a prison cell from a brutal regime. It's an important place. So, I didn't want the album to be too light, because you can't escape from politics anywhere, but especially somewhere like here - and you shouldn't.”
Originally from Derbyshire and now based in Cape Town, Charles Webster has long been woven into South Africa's deep house fabric. His soulful remixes and productions shaped a generation of producers who would later help define the country's modern sound. This new collaborative project draws that lineage full circle. Working alongside Kid Fonque and Stay True Sounds, Webster gathers an extraordinary ensemble of South African talent - from Sio and China Charmeleon to Fka Mash, Bokani Dyer and Muzi. Each track feels like a meeting point between eras: the dubbed-out warmth of 'Flame', the lush vocal interplay on 'Qiniseka', and the sunrise shimmer of 'Soweto Sunrise'.It's a vivid and physical reimagining that recentres jazz's Arabic roots while pushing them somewhere thrillingly new.
