Smoke Ring For My Halo

Vinyl record
DESCRIPTION:
Folk / Indie Rock - through a succession of releases for matador, woodsist, gulcher, richie and mexican summer (not to mention constant touring, both as a headliner an in support of a dizzying range of artists including ariel pink, sonic youth, fucked up, big star, the national, dinosaur jr.and others) kurt has quickly established himself as the troubadour du jour for an increasingly large number of clued-in persons. though initially praised in some corners for having 'absorbed a lifetime's worth of fm rock', kurt's music has developed into something less genre / period-specific yet far more focused and powerful. 'smoke ring for my halo' was recorded by john agnello (sonic youth, dinosaur jr.) throughout 2010 at various studios in nyc, hoboken and philadelphia.

It's the second kurt vile full-length for matador and is easily his most ambitious work to date. assisted by a cast including but not limited to the violators, 'smoke ring' doesn't merely showcase kurt's versatility (keep in mind, this is a guy who was once compared to leonard cohen, psychic tv, tom petty and animal collective - in the same review), but truly ties otherwise disparate elements together in a way that hopefully causes everyone to seriously re-evaluate the very nature of what they consider to be a classic album

Last FM Information on Kurt Vile

Please note the information is done on a artist keyword match and data is provided by LastFM.
Kurt Vile (born 1980 in Philadelphia) is an American guitarist and singer. Previously the lead guitarist in the band The War on Drugs, he began his solo career in 2008. Though his name is sometimes assumed to be a pseudonym due to its similarity to German composer Kurt Weill, it is in fact his birth name, as given by his parents Donna and Charles Vile. Vile began his musical career in 2003 creating lo-fi home recordings with frequent collaborator Adam Granduciel. The duo subsequently formed the indie rock band The War on Drugs in 2005. Vile departed following the release of their debut studio album, Wagonwheel Blues, in 2008. Vile's music has been likened to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and Tom Petty. His first album for Matador, titled Childish Prodigy was released in October 2009. Prior to signing with Matador, Vile released two albums, God Is Saying This To You and Constant Hitmaker, on Mexican Summer and Woodsist, respectively. He plays both solo shows as well as shows with a backing band called The Violators. Smoke Ring For My Halo, released in March of 2011, is Kurt Vile's fourth album and second official release for Matador Records. Uncut placed the album at number 14 on its list of "Top 50 albums of 2011" and garnered Vile the iTunes #Rewind2011 Singer/Songwriter Album of the Year. Vile followed up the widely acclaimed album with the six-song EP release, So Outta Reach, in November of the same year. The EP was composed of tracks originating from the same sessions that birthed Smoke Ring for My Halo. So Outta Reach includes the single 'The Creature', acknowledged as one of Vile's best, and a driving rock cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Downbound Train'. Read more on Last.fm.
