TIGA / HUDSON MOHAWKE - L'ECSTACY

- NEW RELEASE

L'Ecstacy

CATNO:
TURBO229
FORMAT:
Vinyl record
DESCRIPTION:
2x12" LP 16 Tracks OF Electro, Tech & Deep House - The creative partnership between Tiga & Hudson Mohawke expresses a mutual love of “hardcore romance,” a liminal state where the bounds between euphoria, melancholy and the raw power of friendship disintegrate completely. Recorded in Los Angeles from 2019-2023, these commonalities ebbed and flowed through various recording sessions, culminating in their debut album - L’Ecstasy.

Originally conceived as a hardcore rave project focusing on bleary-eyed 6am catharsis, the breadth of the project expanded to encompass their shared love of the music surrounding the 90s rave biome, with chill-out quasi-IDM ambient - “Exit Warehouse at Dawn”, “LMZNIN” - creating space for the album’s tentpole anthems - “IN ORDER 2,” “VSOD,” “Ascending into the Clouds” - to breathe.

Tiga is the stage name of Montreal, Quebec, Canada-born DJ/producer Tiga James Sontag (born 1974). He graduated from Selwyn House School, a prestigious school in Westmount. Before producing music, he was involved in the promotion of rave parties in his native city during the early 1990s, also Tiga was involved in the creation of world renowned afterhours club SONA. In 1994, he opened a record store named DNA Records, and in 1998 founded his own label, Turbo Recordings. Since his rise to success leading into the year 2000 and beyond, Tiga has been ranked the best electro DJ worldwide by DJ ranking polls. Tiga is widely known for his remixes: Tomas Andersson's "Washing Up", Scissor Sisters' Comfortably Numb and Soulwax's "E-Talking" but also for his covers of Nelly's "Hot in Herre", Public Enemy's "Louder than a Bomb", Felix Da Housecat's "Madame Hollywood" and Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night". He produces his own material, but has also worked with Zyntherius, Richard X and Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters. He has frequently collaborated with Mateo Murphy (with whom Tiga forms the duo TGV) and Jesper Dählback, who had produced many of Tiga's newer remixes. Tiga is also good friends with Stephen and David Dewaele from Soulwax, who produced about half of the tracks on Tiga's debut album Sexor. In 2007 he formed a temporary duo with Zombie Nation, under the ZZT-name, they created a trash-hit named "Lower State of Consciousness", which also featured a remix by French hipsters Justice. He made remixes for New Young Pony Club's "Ice Cream" and The Killers' "Bones". He's also working with the Dewaele-brothers on his second album, which will feature more songs in the like of "Far From Home" en "3 Weeks", and less electro-banging sounds, according to the Tiga-podcast. Hudson Mohawke, (b. Ross Birchard), also known as DJ Itchy, Hudson Mo or Hud Mo, is an Electronic music producer/DJ from Glasgow, Scotland, affiliated with the LuckyMe collective of musicians and artists. He is signed to Warp Records and G.O.O.D. Music. Hudson released his debut album Butter in October 2009. At the age of 15 Birchard, under the name DJ Itchy, was the youngest ever UK DMC finalist. His earliest gigs as a club DJ were with Glasgow Uni's Subcity Radio where he was part of the culture city kids show and later other shows including Turntable Science with Pro Vinylist Karim and Cloudo's Happy Hardcore show. Birchard became Hudson Mohawke after seeing the name engraved on a statue in the hallway of his accommodation. He was signed to Warp Records despite a very limited track record of official releases; the bulk of his releases were unofficial tracks and DJ mixes circulated on the Internet. His first official release to get major notice was "Free Mo", a track on the Ubiquity Records various-artists compilation Choices, Vol. 1 (2007); subsequently, he was featured as a remixer on Choices, Vol. 2 (2007). In 2008 his 12" EP Ooops! on LuckyMe/Wireblock became an underground sensation, particularly once word spread of his recording contract with Warp. Read more on Last.fm.
