Yowzers! Christmas comes early on this 12" folks, freaking us with a MASSIVE meeting of musical minds. Obviously Thundercat is one outrageous talent, and "Fair Chance", featuring verses from Ty Dolla $ign and Lil B was a standout track on recent LP "It Is What It Is", bringing us a slow, slanking and syrupy beat with some gorgeous jazz tones. Here we see UK hero Floating Points nudge the ballad onto the dancefloor with a fabulous rework that nods to vintage 4x4 UKG. FP pitches the track up, steels the rhythm section with the swung drums of the garage era, then replays that arpeggiated guitar on analogue synth in his trademark style. Deep and dope club tackle with the ‘Fair Chance’ original / instrumental / acapella grace the flip side.
The rightly acclaimed Thundercat put out his latest album It is What It Is on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder earlier in the year. Now a lead single from it gets offered up as three different versions. The album version is a romantic track with mellifluous chords rippling over lo-fi and subtle drums while the vocals bring the vibes. The always on point Floating Points then reworks it for the dance floor with airy drums that float in mid air as the keys get a bit busier and the vocals remain in place to bring the soul. An instrumental and acappella mean all bases are covered.

Stephen Lee Bruner, stage name Thundercat (b. October 19 1984, Los Angeles, CA, USA) is a virtuoso bassist, composer, producer and singer. Born into a family of musicians, he and his brother were part of legendary thrash punks Suicidal Tendencies (since 16 years of age) - Bruner has collaborated with many, including jams with Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller and Stanley Clarke.
“I do believe that hip-hop can be the new jazz, and I’m helping create that”, Bruner said in an interview to Bass Player, in 2008.
He is part of the new generation of jazz literate, hip-hop loving instrumentalists who can play beyond traditional limits - a mutant jazz cat - and that’s how 'Thundercat' (a monicker he chose), suits him well (even if it’s purely the result of an unhealthy cartoon addiction dating back to childhood).
