1984 Synth /New Wave / Alternative Rock LP Repressed

After an unremarkable debut, Talk Talk regrouped and refashioned themselves more in the style of sophisto-era Roxy Music while developing their own voice. It's My Life shows a great leap in songwriting, the band making highly personal statements with a sexy, seductive groove and a diversity that transcends the synth pop tag. Synthesizers still play a dominant role, but the music is made far more interesting by mixing "real" instruments and challenging world music rhythms seamlessly with the technology. Still pulling off the catchy single (like "Dum Dum Girl" and the title track, as well as the simply sublime "Does Caroline Know?") on It's My Life, Talk Talk also proved themselves capable of achieving a cohesive album -- a rare feat for the time and an unexpected surprise from a band that seemed to be simply a bandwagon-jumper.

Talk Talk were an English band formed in 1981 by Mark Hollis (vocals, guitar, piano), Lee Harris (drums), Paul Webb (bass), and Simon Brenner (keyboards). The band initially performed as a synth-pop group, and their first two albums, "The Party's Over" (1982) and "It's My Life" (1984), reached the top 40 in the UK and produced international singles including "Talk Talk", "Today", "It's My Life", and "Such a Shame". The band's third album, "The Colour of Spring" (1986), brought widespread critical acclaim in the UK and across Europe, with singles such as "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World". Their 1988 album, "Spirit of Eden", marked a shift toward a more experimental sound influenced by jazz and improvisation, helping to pioneer what later became known as post-rock. While "Spirit of Eden" received critical praise, it was less successful commercially. Disputes with their label, EMI, led to legal action, and following Paul Webb's departure, Talk Talk moved to Polydor for their final studio album, "Laughing Stock" (1991), before disbanding. Mark Hollis released a solo album in 1998 and subsequently retired from the music industry; he died in 2019. Paul Webb and Lee Harris collaborated in several other projects, including .O.rang, while long-term collaborator Tim Friese-Greene continued working in music as a producer and musician.
