Reginald Noble (born April 17, 1970), known professionally as Redman, is an American rapper and record producer who rose to prominence in the early 1990s as an artist on Def Jam Recordings. He is known for his collaborations with Method Man as part of the duo Method Man & Redman, including appearances in the film "How High" and the television series "Method & Red". He was also a member of the hip-hop group Def Squad. Redman was born and raised in Newark. He attended Speedway Avenue School, 13th Avenue School, and West Side High School. He briefly attended Montclair State University but was expelled during his freshman year due to poor academic performance. He subsequently returned home, though he was later asked to leave by his mother. As a teenager, he performed as a DJ and MC under the name DJ Kut-Killa, freestyling over funk and hip-hop instrumentals at parties and in public spaces in New York and New Jersey. He was discovered by Erick Sermon of EPMD while working as a DJ for Lords of the Underground. After moving in with Sermon, Redman toured with EPMD, initially performing support roles before appearing on stage. In 1990, he gained wider attention after delivering a freestyle performance at an EPMD concert, which led to work on his debut album "Whut? Thee Album". Redman made his recorded debut on EPMD’s 1990 album "Business as Usual", appearing on the tracks "Hardcore" and "Brothers on My Jock". His debut solo album, "Whut? Thee Album" (1992), combined funk and reggae influences with his rap style and achieved gold certification. His second album, "Dare Iz a Darkside" (1994), also reached the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. Redman later stated that the album was recorded during a difficult period marked by substance abuse. His third album, "Muddy Waters" (1996), received critical acclaim and included the singles "Whateva Man" and "It's Like That (My Big Brother)". Around this time, he collaborated with Tupac Shakur on the album "All Eyez on Me". In 1999, he participated in the Hard Knock Life Tour. In 1998, Redman released "El Niño" with Def Squad and followed it with his fourth solo album, "Doc’s Da Name 2000", which achieved platinum certification and included charting singles such as "I’ll Bee Dat", "Da Goodness", and "Let Da Monkey Out". In 1999, he and Method Man released the collaborative album "Blackout!". His fifth studio album, "Malpractice" (2001), reached number four on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. In the following years, he released the "Ill at Will" mixtape series and worked with artists including Christina Aguilera on "Dirrty" and Pink on a remix of "Get This Party Started". He has also been cited by Eminem as an influence. Under his birth name, he produced music for various artists, including Shaquille O'Neal. Redman released "Red Gone Wild" in 2007. His collaboration with Method Man continued with "Blackout! 2" (2009), which charted in multiple countries. His next solo album, "Redman Presents... Reggie" (2010), marked a stylistic departure, incorporating more mainstream elements. In the 2010s, Redman announced plans for "Muddy Waters 2" and "Blackout! 3", though both projects experienced delays. He released the EP "Mudface" in 2015 and "3 Joints" in 2020. In 2021, he released the track "80 Barz" in collaboration with producer Chris Pinset. His album "Muddy Waters Too" was released on December 24, 2024, as a sequel to "Muddy Waters".
