Mother Love Bone was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987. The band remained active until 1990. It featured vocalist Andrew Wood, guitarists Stone Gossard and Bruce Fairweather, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Greg Gilmore. The band was associated with the Seattle music scene that later became identified with the grunge movement. Mother Love Bone signed with PolyGram in 1988 and released its debut EP, "Shine", in March 1989. Wood died of a heroin overdose in March 1990, shortly before the scheduled release of the band's debut studio album, "Apple", which was subsequently released in July 1990. The band's dissolution was followed by the involvement of its surviving members in several other Seattle-based projects, most notably Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone was established in 1987 by former Green River members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, former Malfunkshun vocalist Andrew Wood, and drummer Regan Hagar. The group developed from the cover band Lords of the Wasteland, which featured Wood, Gossard, Ament, and Hagar. In early 1988, former Green River guitarist Bruce Fairweather joined the group, while former Ten Minute Warning drummer Greg Gilmore replaced Hagar. The band subsequently adopted the name Mother Love Bone. The new lineup began performing and recording, and by late 1988 had attracted attention within the Seattle music scene. Wood became known for his energetic stage presence, distinctive clothing, and lyrical style. Seattle recording engineer Jack Endino later described Wood's stage persona in the 1996 documentary "Hype!". Beginning in May 1988, the band attracted interest from several major record labels, including Capitol, Atlantic, Geffen, and A&M. In November 1988, Mother Love Bone signed with PolyGram subsidiary Polydor. PolyGram established the Stardog Records imprint for the band, which released the group's debut EP, "Shine", in March 1989. The release was one of the first by a new Seattle band on a major record label and contributed to the band's growing profile. In late 1989, Mother Love Bone recorded its debut studio album, "Apple", at a studio in Sausalito, California. The album was scheduled for release in March 1990. In March 1990, Wood, who had a history of heroin addiction, overdosed on heroin and was placed on life support. He died two days later. His death effectively ended Mother Love Bone. "Apple" was released on July 19, 1990. The album later reached number 34 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart in 1992. Following Wood's death, the band's surviving members pursued other projects. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament joined with Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, who had been Wood's roommate, to record songs Cornell had written in tribute to Wood. The project developed into the album "Temple of the Dog", released in 1991. Gossard and Ament subsequently became members of Pearl Jam, alongside vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen. Pearl Jam went on to achieve major commercial and critical success during the 1990s. Bruce Fairweather later joined the Seattle psychedelic rock band Love Battery, replacing bassist Tommy Simpson in 1992. He performed on three of the band's albums and toured with the group before leaving. In 2006, he joined the Press Corps with Garrett Shavlik of the Fluid and Dan Peters of Mudhoney. Greg Gilmore subsequently performed with Chubby Children between 1992 and 1994, reuniting with former bandmates Brian Fox and Garth Brandenburg. The group performed several shows and recorded material that remained unreleased. Gilmore also participated in the 1998 reunion of Ten Minute Warning. He was credited as an inspiration for the Soundgarden song "Never the Machine Forever", which appeared on the 1996 album "Down on the Upside". The song originated from a jam session involving Gilmore and Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil. In 1994, Regan Hagar and Stone Gossard co-founded the independent record label Loosegroove Records. The label ceased operations in 2000, and its catalogue was subsequently acquired by Lakeshore Entertainment. Hagar and Gossard revived the Loosegroove name in 2020. Hagar also performed with Satchel and Brad during the 1990s before pursuing a career as a graphic designer. In April 2011, Kevin Wood, Andrew Wood's brother, collaborated with the hard rock band Lace Weeper on a recording of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns". The single was released through Kevin Wood's Wammybox Records to commemorate the 21st anniversary of Andrew Wood's death. The surviving members of Mother Love Bone reunited in 2010 for the first time in 20 years. On April 14, 2010, Gossard, Ament, Fairweather, and Gilmore performed at a "Brad and Friends" event at the Showbox in Seattle, with Seattle musician Shawn Smith providing vocals. The set included "Stardog Champion", "Holy Roller", "Gentle Groove", and a cover of Argent's "Hold Your Head Up", which had been performed by the band during its early Seattle club appearances. On May 5, 2018, the four surviving members reunited again at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle. The group performed 14 songs, including "Hold Your Head Up", with Smith and Ohm Johari of Hell's Belles providing vocals.
