Before guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament went on to form Pearl Jam, they were in one of the best bands in Seattle - Mother Love Bone. Mother Love Bone are seen as key figures in the development of grunge but sonically have a lot more in common with Red Hot Chili Peppers' Mothers Milk album and Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking albums on this first EP, originally released in 1989. This is largely down to the bombast of late, great frontman Andrew Wood and the type of reverb we hear on his vocals. Moreover, lead guitarist Bruce Fairweather had a bit of Dave Navarro about him with flashy solos on the bonus track 'Capricorn Sister'. Elsewhere, 'Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns' has a bit of a Guns N Roses 'November Rain' about it, but came earlier than said blockbuster single by Axl Rose and co. The late 80s and early 90s were such a great era for hard rock and punk on the United States west coast and it's due to records like this that it's thought so.
