MGMT is an American rock band formed in 2002 in Middletown, Connecticut, by singers and multi-instrumentalists Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. Initially signed to the independent label Cantora Records by co-founder and NYU student Will Griggs, the band later signed with Columbia and RED Ink in 2006. Their debut album, "Oracular Spectacular", was released the following year.
Following the success of "Oracular Spectacular", musicians such as James Richardson, Will Berman, and Matthew Asti joined the band for the recording of their second album, "Congratulations", which was released on April 13, 2010. Work on their third studio album, titled "MGMT", began in January 2011 and it was released on September 17, 2013, with an early exclusive release on Rdio on September 9, 2013. Their fourth album, "Little Dark Age", was released in February 2018 and marked the conclusion of their contract with Columbia Records. Beginning in 2019, MGMT started producing music independently for the first time since 2006, releasing the single "In the Afternoon" in late 2019 as their first fully self-produced track.
The band received early critical attention, with Spin naming them "Artist of the Day" on October 5, 2007. Rolling Stone listed them among the top ten "Artists to Watch" in 2008 and later included "Oracular Spectacular" at number 494 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. MGMT also ranked ninth in the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll and was named Last.fm’s most played new artist of 2008. At the 51st Grammy Awards, the Justice remix of their song "Electric Feel" won the award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. At the 52nd Grammy Awards, MGMT was nominated for Best New Artist, and their song "Kids" was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
