As a series, Late Night Tales is an interesting exercise. Asking musicians to make late-night mixes from their own collections, the series finds artists ranging from Jamiroquai to the Flaming Lips putting together their own mixtapes of quintessential after-hours jams, but on the MGMT installment, the series really knocks it out of the park. Featuring songs by artists like Television Personalities, Spacemen 3, and Suicide, the collection succeeds on a couple of levels, existing not only as a solid set of spacy, nocturnal songs, but also as a Rosetta Stone for MGMT’s own influences. Listening to the album almost feels like putting together a puzzle, with the finished product being their eclectic sophomore effort, Congratulations. And as if a collection of some of the moodiest, reverb-soaked post-punk to ever walk the earth wasn’t enough, the album also features MGMT performing a cover of Bauhaus’ “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything,” which manages to s

MGMT is an American rock band formed in 2002 in Middletown, Connecticut, by singers and multi-instrumentalists Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. Initially signed to the independent label Cantora Records by co-founder and NYU student Will Griggs, the band later signed with Columbia and RED Ink in 2006. Their debut album, "Oracular Spectacular", was released the following year. Following the success of "Oracular Spectacular", musicians such as James Richardson, Will Berman, and Matthew Asti joined the band for the recording of their second album, "Congratulations", which was released on April 13, 2010. Work on their third studio album, titled "MGMT", began in January 2011 and it was released on September 17, 2013, with an early exclusive release on Rdio on September 9, 2013. Their fourth album, "Little Dark Age", was released in February 2018 and marked the conclusion of their contract with Columbia Records. Beginning in 2019, MGMT started producing music independently for the first time since 2006, releasing the single "In the Afternoon" in late 2019 as their first fully self-produced track. The band received early critical attention, with Spin naming them "Artist of the Day" on October 5, 2007. Rolling Stone listed them among the top ten "Artists to Watch" in 2008 and later included "Oracular Spectacular" at number 494 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. MGMT also ranked ninth in the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll and was named Last.fm’s most played new artist of 2008. At the 51st Grammy Awards, the Justice remix of their song "Electric Feel" won the award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. At the 52nd Grammy Awards, MGMT was nominated for Best New Artist, and their song "Kids" was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
