This dark and dreamy psychedelic band pairs former Rain Parade and Opal guitarist Dave Roback with vocalist Hope Sandoval. Drawing primarily from the swirling, textured drone of such '60s groups as the Velvet Underground and the Doors, Mazzy Star also incorporate blues, country, and pulsing acoustic folk elements, creating a highly textured and luminous amalgam. The band's auspicious debut is a rich, atmospheric bag of tricks.
There are few higher compliments to one's music than being included in Kurt Cobain's list of 50 favourite albums - his discerning taste and obsession with music mean his lists have always been an incredible resource. Mazzy Star's debut album of mysterious melancholia is among them and it's an album, compared with the better known follow up that gave us 'Fade Into You', fits more along the lines of early Verve for its stirring shoegaze tint. Even though singer Hope Sandoval and sing the phone book they don't overly rely on her vocal and David Roback's guitars are a feast for the ears. The title track is particularly spell binding, as is 'Blue Flower' with the heavily distorted riff, tambourine, propulsive bass and seductive vocal melody combining beautifully to leave you in a state of awe.
