Vocal Tech / House - Paul Woolford Serves Up 2023 Update On Vocal Tech Classic - 'Love Story' is one of the most classic tunes in all of house music. It was written by Layo & Buschwaka who heard the original 'Finally' by Kings of Tomorrow and wanted to tweak it to their own ends so mashed it up with further samples from Dave, Nina Simone and Tati Quebra-Barraco. It's a rousing, heartwarming dancefloor trip of the highest order and who better to remix it than the always on fire Paul Woolford. His extended 2023 edit brings all the best bits to the fore and ensures we will be hearing this one all summer long. No complaints here.
Grammy nominated producer, remixer, songwriter and DJ Paul Woolford has been redefining and reinventing all shapes of dance music for over 20 years. Paul adds another huge remix to the track’s rich history, which has been through many iterations over its 20-year history.
Back in the early 2000s, London based DJs Layo & Bushwacka! recorded the track ‘Love Story’, sampling a bassline from 70’s art punk band Devo, and a vocal from Nina Simone’s ‘Rags & Old Iron’. The track became an anthem at the DJ duo’s residency at The End nightclub. Throughout 2002, its popularity in underground clubs grew to a point where it was getting played by DJs all over the world.
To freshen it up for his own sets, Matthew “Bushwacka!” B, started playing the acapella vocal from another current club song, Kings Of Tomorrow’s ‘Finally,’ over the top Hot remixer Tim Deluxe then remixed Matthew’s bootleg version as ‘Love Story (vs Finally)’. This version became a club hit and a top 10 single in the UK charts when it was released on January 13th 2003.
20 years on, the remix is released by XL Recordings on 12” vinyl (pre-order here) with ‘Love Story (Original Version)’ on the b-side.

Matthew 'Bushwacka!' Benjamin has always been into music: as a schoolboy in Ladbroke Grove, West London, he was playing percussion in the London School Symphony Orchestra." I played the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican. We toured Italy when I was 13. It was a magical time of my life." It was 1988, and hooked on hip-hop and DJing, his life was about to take a sharp left turn. "In August '88 I went to a Rat Pack warehouse party. I left there at 11 o'clock the next morning and come home to an angry mum." Handing out flyers by night and working in Harrods by day, he began working for the Rat Pack. By 1989's summer of orbital rave he was DJing for them, as well as on London's legendary ‘Radio Rental’ pirate station Sunrise FM. Read more on Last.fm.
