It seems fitting that the hundredth and final volume in the "FabricLive" mix series should also be its most hotly anticipated. Coming from heavyweight heroes Kode9 and Burial - whose previous back-to-back mix for Mary-Anne Hobbs' show eight years ago has reached near mythical status. The album is a wonderfully full-throttle and mixed-up affair, with the shadowy bass lieutenants giddily flitting between quick-fire sections focusing on South African gqom, footwork, Juke, vintage hardcore, early jungle and more contemporary dancefloor experimentalism, each broken up by typically blazed and paranoid ambient interludes and the occasional surprise selection. There's a lot going on throughout, but that only adds to the fun. In other words, it's a triumphant finale to a landmark mix series.
For the 100th and final instalment of the iconic FABRICLIVE mix series, in its current form, two UK pioneers unite for a hypnotic 74 minute mix. Burial and Kode9 are each credited with fostering esoteric, hyperlocal sounds and steering them to global recognition, helping to shape the landscape of contemporary electronic music as we know it. They are also close peers, having influenced each other’s careers immeasurably over many years.
Since launching his seminal Hyperdub imprint in 2004, Kode9 has sustained a reputation as one of the most innovative artists, curators and DJs. He was a regular fixture at the legendary DMZ and Fwd>> nights in London - which to many are still considered as setting the bar for clubbing in the city and nurturing the rebirth of the post-millenial UK scene. Since 2017 he runs and co-curates Ø, a monthly event at Corsica Studios merging immersive installations with groundbreaking musical programming. From 2003-2009 he hosted the Fwd>> radio show on Rinse FM, later co-hosting the Hyperdub show alongside Scratcha DVA. He has three studio albums, Memories of Future (2006) and Black Sun (2010) with The Spaceape, Nothing (2015) and three DJ compilations, Dubstep Allstars vol.3 (Tempa 2006), DJ Kicks (!K7 2011) and Rinse 22 (Rinse 2013) to his name, as well as tracks released on labels ranging from Aphex Twin’s Rephlex imprint and Soul Jazz to Warp and Domino.
As one of the most enigmatic artists of the 21st century, Burial is responsible for birthing a sound that is truly singular. There are few producers whose work is so instantly recognisable, to the point that his name is now synonymous with a distinct set of eerie sonic components. His disquieting depictions of South London, informed heavily by sound system and UK rave culture, are widely considered masterpieces, with the cultural impact of his work echoing far further afield than his hometurf. His relationship with Kode9 and Hyperdub stems back to his first EP, South London Boroughs (2005), with almost every subsequent release, including two highly influential studio albums, Burial (2006) & Untrue (2007) residing on the label.
Both artist’s origins can be traced back to bass-heavy strands of UK underground music - a sphere in which they have worked closely together for many years - but the idiosyncrasies of their respective styles are recognised on a much broader scale. As such, the mix reaches into obscure corners and a disorienting range of tempos across its 37 tracks. Featuring artists from Africa, China, South America and Japan as well as the Europe and US, the mix draws from gqom, juke and footwork to trance, jungle and grime, as well as a wealth of material that defies categorisation. it sounds like it was stitched together from a box of unknown mixtapes found in the gutter.

Kode9 (born Steve Goodman in Glasgow, Scotland) is a leading figure in the South London Dubstep scene. As a producer and DJ he most known for his collaborations with MC the Spaceape (aka Daddi Gee). He is also the founder of the pioneering UK label Hyperdub. Along with Pinch, Kode9 was one of the few producers at the dawn of Dubstep not from Croydon.
Inspired by jungle, dub, drum and bass and the then emerging 2step garage scene (or what he calls the "hardcore continuum"), Kode9 released his first tune '99 on Katasonix and in 2000-2001 he hosted the Hyperdub sessions in London, probably the first club night to push the dubstep sound. 2002 saw the release of the seminal "Fat Larry's Skank" on Tempa, followed by "Babylon" on Tempa and tracks on Rephlex' "Grime 2" comp in 2004. Since then he founded Hyperdub, released two albums and was featured on mix series such as Dubstep Allstars and DJ Kicks. He was also a FWD>> resident and hosted a weekly show on Rinse.
He is often noted for his Memetic Philosophy on music and sonic culture. Steve has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Warwick and is a Lecturer in Music Culture in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of East London. Burial is the moniker of William Bevan, a reclusive South Londoner who has become one of the most acclaimed, influential, and enigmatic electronic musicians of the early 21st century, thanks to his groundbreaking music as well as his reluctance to reveal any information about himself. Inspired by the anonymity of British club music, particularly garage, jungle, and hardcore, his tracks blend fractured breakbeats with mysterious, pitch-shifted voices and loads of vinyl crackle, rainfall, and submerged video game sound effects, creating gloomy, dystopian soundscapes evoking lonely nights spent wandering around an empty, desolate city. While his self-titled 2006 debut (one of the first notable dubstep full-lengths) received wide acclaim from the underground music press, the astonishing 2007 follow-up Untrue proved to be a major artistic breakthrough. Not only was it one of the most widely praised albums of the year, but its influence endured throughout the following decade, with countless producers emulating its vocal manipulations and dramatic, rain-soaked atmospherics. Collaborations with Four Tet, Thom Yorke, and Massive Attack followed, as well as several EPs which ranged from abstract, cinematic suites (2012's Kindred, 2013's Rival Dealer) to more club-friendly singles (2017's "Rodent"). While Burial continued to refrain from making public appearances or releasing a third album, he collaborated with Kode9 to mix Fabriclive100, the final volume of the long-running mix CD series, in 2018.
Burial debuted in March 2005 on the Hyperdub label with the South London Borough EP, which included the tracks "Southern Comfort" and "Broken Home." These two tracks would be among the highlights of the full-length album Burial (2006), whose release was accompanied by a second EP, Distant Lights (2006). Comprising bleak, evocative dubstep -- one track, "Night Bus," is entirely beatless, driven only by sampled rainfall and eerie synth melodies -- Burial was critically acclaimed, and most notably voted Album of the Year by The Wire; it was also voted among the best albums of the year by Mixmag. Burial's second album, Untrue (2007), was eagerly awaited as a result of all the acclaim; an EP, Ghost Hardware (2007), was released a few months in advance, drumming up further interest. Like its predecessor, Untrue was critically acclaimed, voted among the best albums of the year by XLR8R, for instance, and reviewed even more favorably than its predecessor.
In February 2008, British newspaper The Independent made a claim that William Bevan, indeed a native of South London, was the individual behind Burial. Bevan later confirmed the report, continued to record under his alias, and issued several collaborative works with the likes of former schoolmate Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), Thom Yorke, Massive Attack, and Jamie Woon. He issued three additional Hyperdub EPs -- Street Halo, Kindred, and Truant -- in 2011 and 2012. A Japanese CD release combined the first two. Bevan's 2013 was quiet until that December, when he released a three-track EP for Hyperdub titled Rival Dealer. A single-sided 12" titled Temple Sleeper surfaced on Keysound in 2015. The following year, Burial collaborated with Zomby on a track called "Sweetz," which appeared on Zomby's Ultra album and was also released as a single. Later in the year, Burial's Young Death/Nightmarket arrived on Hyperdub.
In April of 2017, Burial's remix of Goldie's jungle classic "Inner City Life" was released by Metalheadz. The following month, Burial's ambient Subtemple EP appeared on Hyperdub. He returned to beat-driven material in September with the garage-leaning single "Rodent," which was backed with a remix by Hyperdub boss Kode9, as well as "Pre Dawn," which appeared on Non Plus. In 2018, Burial and Kode9 mixed Fabriclive100, the conclusion of one of the two mix-CD series produced by London club Fabric. Single "Claustro"/"State Forest" appeared in 2019, and Burial ended the year with Tunes 2011-2019, a double-CD compiling most of his Hyperdub-issued output throughout the decade.
