DESCRIPTION:
2x12" folk , Acoustic & Soundtrack Pressed on Soda Pop Bottle Blue Vinyl
Before his second career as a songwriter riding an easy, sun-worn register, there were cameras, boards, and long stretches of ocean between friends: Surfilmusic hears Jack Johnson home, travelling back in spacetime to when he was still living, not just soundtracking, the surf life. The record breaks tide like travel footage, as Hermanos Gutierrez adds dry, drifting counterpoint, carving away from Johnson's usual, foamy-warm (sound) wave. Appearances from Kelly Slater and Rob Machado bring the soundtrack to extra life; a rather claming score and complement to Emmett Malloy's newest film instalment for 2026.
SURFILMUSIC is an intimate look into Jack’s evolution from surfer to filmmaker to world-renowned musician. The documentary traces how his early years making surf films with close friends became a foundation for a much broader creative life, capturing moments in and out of the water that later surfaced in his songwriting. Blending rare footage from those formative surf films and Jack's personal and family archives with present-day reflections, the film weaves together how lived experience, friendship, and exploration shaped the sound and stories behind the music. Featuring Jack, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Gerry Lopez, Chris Malloy, G. Love, Ben Harper, John Florence, Tamayo Perry, Emmett Malloy, and Kim Johnson. Directed by Emmett Malloy. Score by Jack and Hermanos Gutiérrez.
