By 1970 Marvin Gaye was already a phenomenally successful singer, with a string of hit singles to his name, making him Motown's number one male performer. However, when he entered the Hitsville studio on June 1st to cut a new single, Marvin hungered for more. All over the world social unrest was prompting political activism and cultural revolution. Yet the Motown hit production line carried on like nothing was happening. Marvin longed to make a statement that would reflect the new reality, so when Al Cleveland and The Four Tops' Obie Benson brought him the framework of a song called "What's Going On", he jumped at the chance to record it. Initially rejected by Motown, the track went on to become a runaway smash, and the label demanded a full length LP to capitalize on sales. Recorded in ten days in March 1971 the "What's Going On" album features co-writing credits from awesome session band the Funk Brothers, as well as brass and string arrangements by David Van De Pitte. The heady mix of percussive-heavy grooves, luxurious fills and Marvin's sweet vocals became an instant classic. Taking in themes like the Vietnam war, poverty, spirituality and green issues, the album seems just as relevant today as it did back at the start of the 70s and deserves the vote as 'greatest album ever' that it often receives.

Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. (born Gay; 2 April 1939 – 1 April 1984) was an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. Often referred to as the "Prince of Motown" and the "Prince of Soul", he played a significant role in shaping the sound of Motown and soul music during the 1960s. He is regarded as an influential and widely recognised figure in popular music. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Gaye began his career under the guidance of Harvey Fuqua, joining the group Harvey and the Moonglows before embarking on a solo career in the early 1960s. After signing with Motown’s Tamla label, he achieved commercial success with singles including "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You)", "Ain't That Peculiar" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". He also recorded a series of successful duets with female artists, notably Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell, with whom he recorded songs such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "You're All I Need to Get By". Following the release of "What's Going On" (1971), he gained greater creative control over his work and subsequently produced albums including "Let's Get It On", "I Want You" and "Here, My Dear". After a period living in Europe as a tax exile, Gaye left Motown and signed with Columbia Records in 1982. That year, he released "Midnight Love", which included the single "Sexual Healing", one of his most commercially successful recordings. In 1983, he performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the NBA All-Star Game. The success of "Sexual Healing" led to him receiving an American Music Award and two Grammy Awards. On 1 April 1984, Gaye was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., at his parents’ home in Los Angeles, one day before his 45th birthday. His father later pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and received a suspended sentence and probation. Gaye’s work influenced the development of soul music in both the 1960s and 1970s, and his later recordings contributed to the emergence of R&B subgenres such as quiet storm and neo soul. His music has been included in various lists of the greatest songs and albums. His honours include two Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and inductions into the NAACP Hall of Fame, the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
