1975 Experimental / Abmbient LP - Remastered & Pressed on 180g vinyl. Although originally released interspersed with other albums and thus not fully sequential, these landmark records chart 4 key points in a fascinating journey that saw Eno explore generative music, found-sound ‘non instruments’, studio experimentation, ‘figurative music’ and–most notably–building upon Erik Satie’s concept of ‘furniture music’, eventually coining the now vernacular-standard term ‘ambient’.
he latter part of 1975 was a remarkably creative period for Brian Eno. With his masterpiece Another Green World, Eno began moving away from the structure and sound of pop music toward a more static instrumental model, influenced in part by Erik Satie and strongly informed by his prior collaborations with Robert Fripp. Recorded just a month after Another Green World, Discreet Music is his first full foray into what has become known as ambient music. Using the same system of two reel-to-reel tape recorders as No Pussyfooting and Evening Star, Eno was able to layer simple parts atop one another, resulting in a beautiful piece of music that never really changes but constantly evolves with the addition and decay of different parts. And while there were elements of noise and dissonance on the albums with Fripp, all the sounds here are calming and serene. The second half of the album deals with the same ideas of recurring themes and evolution but uses a different approach.
Here, members of the Cockpit Ensemble use pieces of the score of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, but the relation of these elements changes over time by having the parts slow at differing intervals or using different lengths of the musical score. The same notions of theme and constant variation appear, but without the aid of the tape delay system. The tones of the strings are vastly different from the synth tones of the title track, but the effect on the listener is the same, with the pieces delicately unfolding over time. Discreet Music's reputation as a groundbreaking and influential work is surpassed only by its placid beauty. Highly recommended.

Brian Peter George Eno (born 15 May 1948) is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, visual artist, sound designer, author, and political activist. He is known for his contributions to ambient music and electronica, as well as for his work in rock and pop music as a producer, composer, and collaborator. Eno has described himself as a "non-musician", reflecting his emphasis on conceptual and experimental approaches to music-making. He has been regarded as an influential figure in popular music. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band "Roxy Music".
Eno was born in Suffolk and studied painting and experimental music at Ipswich Civic College in the mid-1960s before continuing his education at Winchester School of Art. In 1971, he joined the glam rock group "Roxy Music" as a synthesiser player, contributing to two albums before leaving the band in 1973. He subsequently began a solo career with the release of the rock-oriented album "Here Come the Warm Jets" (1974). He later explored minimalist and ambient approaches on recordings such as "Discreet Music" (1975) and "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" (1978), the latter of which introduced the term "ambient music".
During the 1970s, Eno collaborated with a range of artists, including Robert Wyatt, Robert Fripp, Harmonia, Cluster, Harold Budd, David Bowie, John Cale, and David Byrne. He also became an established record producer, working on projects by Jon Hassell, Laraaji, "Talking Heads", Ultravox, and Devo, as well as producing the compilation album "No New York" (1978). In later decades, he continued to release solo material and produce recordings for artists such as "U2", "Coldplay", Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois, Laurie Anderson, Grace Jones, Slowdive, Karl Hyde of "Underworld", James, Kevin Shields, and Damon Albarn.
In addition to his musical work, Eno has been active in other artistic fields since his student years, including sound installations, film, and writing. In the mid-1970s, he co-developed "Oblique Strategies", a set of cards designed to encourage creative thinking through prompts and aphorisms. His installation work has included projects involving the sails of the Sydney Opera House in 2009 and the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank in 2016.
Eno has also been involved in political and humanitarian causes. He has written on a variety of topics and is a founding member of the Long Now Foundation. His activism has included advocacy related to environmental issues, opposition to Brexit and the Conservative Party, and support for Julian Assange. He has also expressed views on the situation in the Gaza Strip and participated in initiatives such as signing a 2025 pledge by Film Workers for Palestine regarding collaboration with certain Israeli film institutions.
