1982 Ambiemntg LP Remastered & Pressed on 180g vinyl. Although originally released interspersed with other albums and thus not fully sequential, these landmark records chart 4 key points in a fascinating journey that saw Eno explore generative music, found-sound ‘non instruments’, studio experimentation, ‘figurative music’ and–most notably–building upon Erik Satie’s concept of ‘furniture music’, eventually coining the now vernacular-standard term ‘ambient’.
On Land represented a significant move away from the strategies Brian Eno had employed in earlier ambient releases such as Discreet Music and Music for Airports. Instead of using a specific process to generate music with minimal interference from the composer, he here opts for a more gestural and intuitive approach, creating dreamy pictures of some specific geographical points or evocative memories of them. It's quite easy to imagine these works as soundtracks to mysterious footage of imprecisely glimpsed landscapes. On Land is an album that would become highly influential with the rising tide of new age composers, though few if any would capture the chilly beauty or latent romanticism that is part and parcel of Eno. The first piece, "Lizard Point," includes an early recorded performance of Bill Laswell on bass, and one imagines that his association with Eno was a crucial factor in the ambient directions his later work would sometimes take. On Land remains a landmark event in the genre, as well as one of its high-water marks, and sounds entirely up to date 20 years after its initial release. A superb effort.

Brian Peter George Eno (born 15 May 1948) is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, visual artist, sound designer, author, and political activist. He is known for his contributions to ambient music and electronica, as well as for his work in rock and pop music as a producer, composer, and collaborator. Eno has described himself as a "non-musician", reflecting his emphasis on conceptual and experimental approaches to music-making. He has been regarded as an influential figure in popular music. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band "Roxy Music".
Eno was born in Suffolk and studied painting and experimental music at Ipswich Civic College in the mid-1960s before continuing his education at Winchester School of Art. In 1971, he joined the glam rock group "Roxy Music" as a synthesiser player, contributing to two albums before leaving the band in 1973. He subsequently began a solo career with the release of the rock-oriented album "Here Come the Warm Jets" (1974). He later explored minimalist and ambient approaches on recordings such as "Discreet Music" (1975) and "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" (1978), the latter of which introduced the term "ambient music".
During the 1970s, Eno collaborated with a range of artists, including Robert Wyatt, Robert Fripp, Harmonia, Cluster, Harold Budd, David Bowie, John Cale, and David Byrne. He also became an established record producer, working on projects by Jon Hassell, Laraaji, "Talking Heads", Ultravox, and Devo, as well as producing the compilation album "No New York" (1978). In later decades, he continued to release solo material and produce recordings for artists such as "U2", "Coldplay", Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois, Laurie Anderson, Grace Jones, Slowdive, Karl Hyde of "Underworld", James, Kevin Shields, and Damon Albarn.
In addition to his musical work, Eno has been active in other artistic fields since his student years, including sound installations, film, and writing. In the mid-1970s, he co-developed "Oblique Strategies", a set of cards designed to encourage creative thinking through prompts and aphorisms. His installation work has included projects involving the sails of the Sydney Opera House in 2009 and the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank in 2016.
Eno has also been involved in political and humanitarian causes. He has written on a variety of topics and is a founding member of the Long Now Foundation. His activism has included advocacy related to environmental issues, opposition to Brexit and the Conservative Party, and support for Julian Assange. He has also expressed views on the situation in the Gaza Strip and participated in initiatives such as signing a 2025 pledge by Film Workers for Palestine regarding collaboration with certain Israeli film institutions.
