Dry Cleaning are an English post-punk band formed in South London in 2017. The group consists of vocalist Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, bassist Lewis Maynard, and drummer Nick Buxton. Noted for their distinctive blend of motorik riffs, angular guitar work, and Shaw’s spoken-word vocal delivery, Dry Cleaning quickly gained attention for their unconventional lyrics, dry wit, and minimalist approach.
After initially coming together as longtime friends experimenting with instrumentals, the band’s sound crystallized when Shaw, a university lecturer and visual artist, joined as vocalist—despite having no prior experience in bands. Their debut single, “Magic of Meghan,” emerged in 2019, followed by two acclaimed EPs: Sweet Princess and Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks.
Dry Cleaning released their debut album, New Long Leg, in 2021 to widespread critical acclaim. Their follow-up, Stumpwork (2022), further established their reputation, characterized by observational, collage-like lyrics and inventive post-punk instrumentation. Stumpwork won the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package in 2023, celebrating its striking design and packaging art—an important milestone in the band’s career. Renowned for their democratic writing and introspective approach, Dry Cleaning continue to evolve, with their third studio album currently in production with producer Cate Le Bon in France as of 2025.
