Drab Majesty is the Los Angeles-based darkwave/dream pop project led by Deb Demure, the androgynous alter-ego of multi-instrumentalist Andrew Clinco. Founded in 2011, Drab Majesty combines reverb-soaked guitars, shimmering synths, commanding yet ethereal vocals, and crisp drum machine beats—crafting what Demure calls “tragic wave,” a unique fusion of classic ’80s new wave, shoegaze, and a futuristic, otherworldly edge. Clinco began Drab Majesty while drumming for Marriages, inspired by bandmate Emma Ruth Rundle to learn guitar and embark on solo songwriting. The first release, Unarian Dances (2012), was a limited-edition cassette, quickly gaining a cult following and later reissued by Lollipop Records. Drab Majesty then joined Dais Records and released the debut LP, Careless (2015), which received acclaim for its lush atmospheres and melancholic grandeur. Completely Careless, a 2016 compilation, gathered early material and rare tracks, further expanding their audience. In 2016, Drab Majesty released a split single with King Dude, and followed up with the breakthrough sophomore album The Demonstration (2017), a concept record exploring themes of cult psychology and collective identity. That same year, the tribute single “Oak Wood” was released in honor of Cash Askew, a friend and fellow musician lost in the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. In 2016, keyboardist Mona D (Alex Nicolaou) officially joined the project, transforming Drab Majesty into a duo and deepening the band’s sound and live presence. Their theatrical, androgynous aesthetic—white wigs, mirrored sunglasses, and enigmatic stage personas—has become a signature, blurring the lines between performance art and gothic ritual. Drab Majesty’s third album, Modern Mirror (2019), drew inspiration from the myth of Narcissus and was praised for its introspective lyrics, shimmering guitarwork, and bold sonic palette. The album marked a further evolution toward lush, melodic soundscapes while retaining the band’s haunting core. In 2023, Drab Majesty returned with the mini-album An Object in Motion, a 4-track EP that sees the duo exploring neo-psychedelic textures and collaborating with Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell on the single “Vanity.” The EP’s centerpiece, “The Skin and the Glove,” was praised for its hypnotic blend of shoegaze and dream pop. Their most recent single, “Photograph,” appeared on the soundtrack to the A24 film I Saw the TV Glow in 2024, signaling a continued relevance and willingness to experiment. Throughout their career, Drab Majesty have toured extensively, sharing stages with acts such as Cold Cave, King Dude, Slowdive, and AFI, while building a devoted international following. Deb Demure continues to frame the project as a vessel for outside inspiration, emphasizing the mystical and impersonal nature of creativity—while the project itself serves as an ongoing meditation on identity, performance, and the boundaries between the drab and the divine.
