1973 Jazz Funk / Soul Repressed on 180g Vinyl - Philadelphia quartet Catalyst remain a cult name in 70s jazz-funk, and this long-lost session shows why. Their third album finds them slipping between groove-driven soul jazz and darker, more exploratory fusion.
The title track, 'Perception', opens with a taut, funky swing, while 'Uzuri' adds modal shimmer and spiralling solos. On the flip, 'Celestial Bodies' stretches into freer space, its shifting harmonies nodding to the avant-garde, before 'Ile Ife' locks into a simmering, Afrocentric rhythm. Closing cut 'Got to Be There' shows their soulful side, recasting a pop tune with deep-pocket feel and sharp ensemble interplay. Unavailable on vinyl for over half a century, the record makes clear Catalyst's unique ability to fuse accessibility with boundary-pushing spirit.
