Johnny Cash was in the unenviable position of being a living legend who was beloved by fans of classic country music without being able to interest anyone in his most recent work when he was signed to Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in 1994. Rubin, best known for his work with edgy rockers and hip-hop acts, opted to produce Cash's first album for American, and as he tried to brainstorm an approach that would introduce Cash to a new audience, he struck upon a brilliant idea -- doing nothing. For American Recordings, Rubin simply set up some recording equipment in Cash's Tennessee cabin and recorded him singing a set of songs accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. The result is an album that captured the glorious details of Johnny Cash's voice and allowed him to demonstrate just how emotionally powerful an instrument he possessed. While Rubin clearly brought some material to Cash

John R. Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter. His music often explored themes of sorrow, moral reflection, and redemption, particularly in his later work. He had a deep bass-baritone voice and was accompanied by the Tennessee Three, a backing band noted for its distinctive guitar rhythms. Cash was known for performing prison concerts and frequently wore an all-black stage wardrobe, which led to his nickname "Man in Black." Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, to a family of cotton farmers. He grew up listening to gospel music and performed on a local radio station during high school. He served four years in the Air Force, including time stationed in West Germany. After returning to the United States, he became prominent in the mid-1950s rockabilly scene in Memphis, Tennessee. In his concerts, he often introduced himself with "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash," followed by performances of songs such as "Folsom Prison Blues." Other notable songs from his career include "I Walk the Line," "Ring of Fire," "Get Rhythm," and "Man in Black." He also recorded humorous tracks like "One Piece at a Time" and "A Boy Named Sue," duets with his future wife June such as "Jackson," and songs about railroads including "Hey, Porter," "Orange Blossom Special," and "Rock Island Line." Later in his career, Cash covered songs by contemporary rock artists, including "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden, and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode. Cash sold more than 90 million records worldwide. His work encompassed country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel music. He was inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His life and career were depicted in the 2005 biographical film "Walk the Line."
