Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. She is known for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and use of the whistle register. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her as the fifth-greatest singer of all time.
Carey rose to prominence with her self-titled debut album "Mariah Carey" (1990). She became the first artist to have their first five singles reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, from "Vision of Love" through "Emotions". She achieved further international success with the albums "Music Box" (1993) and "Daydream" (1995). In the mid-1990s, she incorporated hip hop elements into her music, beginning with the remix of "Fantasy" featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard, and continued this stylistic shift on "Butterfly" (1997). Carey had eleven consecutive years with at least one US number-one single and was named Artist of the Decade by Billboard for the 1990s. After a period of reduced commercial performance in the early 2000s, she returned to prominence with "The Emancipation of Mimi" (2005), which became one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century. She has since released additional studio albums.
Carey has released several holiday recordings, including "Merry Christmas" (1994), one of the best-selling holiday albums. Its lead single, "All I Want for Christmas Is You", has become one of the best-selling holiday singles and has achieved multiple runs at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside of music, she co-founded Camp Mariah with the Fresh Air Fund in 1994. She has appeared in films including "Glitter" (2001), "Precious" (2009), "The Butler" (2013), and "The Lego Batman Movie" (2017), and served as a judge on the television series "American Idol" in 2013. Her memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" (2020), reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list.
Carey is among the best-selling music artists, with estimated sales of over 220 million records worldwide. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her awards include five Grammy Awards, a Grammy Global Impact Award, 10 American Music Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 14 Billboard Music Awards, and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from MTV. In 2008, Time included her in its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), as well as records among female artists for number-one singles written (18) and produced (15). According to Billboard, "One Sweet Day" and "We Belong Together" were the most successful songs of the 1990s and 2000s, respectively. She has received four Diamond certifications in the United States.
