Like many musicians, Brockhampton spent much of 2020 recording new material, premiering plenty of it on their various social media channels. Despite this deluge of material, there was much more that they were holding back, and it's those tracks that make up their sixth studio set, Roadrunner: New Light New Machine. It was produced by a wide variety of contributors (including the RZA and Rick Rubin) and sees Kevin Abstract and his self-styled "hip-hop boy band" colleagues add their usual attractive mixture of rap verses and harmonic, R&B style choruses to largely sparse but tough backing tracks rich in crunchy machine drums and deep, booming basslines.

Brockhampton was an American hip-hop group founded in San Marcos, Texas, in 2014. Formed partially through online forums, the group was recognized for its size, diversity, and extensive discography. The final line-up included vocalists Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Merlyn Wood, and Dom McLennon; producers and vocalists Joba, Bearface, and Jabari Manwa; producers Romil Hemnani and Kiko Merley; graphic designer HK; photographer Ashlan Grey; web designer Roberto Ontenient; and manager Jon Nunes. Founded by Kevin Abstract, Brockhampton included members of the defunct Internet music collective AliveSinceForever. Their debut mixtape, "All-American Trash", was independently released in 2016. After relocating to Los Angeles, the group gained critical and commercial success with the studio albums "Saturation", "Saturation II", and "Saturation III", released over six months in 2017. In 2018, they signed to RCA Records, and founding member Ameer Vann was removed from the group following accusations of sexual misconduct. "Iridescence" (2018) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned a Brit Awards nomination. "Ginger" (2019) and "Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine" (2021) achieved similar commercial success, with "Ginger" producing the multi-platinum single "Sugar". In 2022, Brockhampton disbanded following the release of their final studio albums "The Family" and "TM". Primarily categorized as a hip-hop collective, Brockhampton was noted in their early years for branding themselves as a boy band, aiming to redefine the term. The group's size and diversity included rappers, singers, producers, photographers, and other roles representing various sexualities, ethnicities, and nationalities. The group was also recognized for their productivity, releasing eight studio albums within five years of their debut project.
