Folk, Rock LP - originally from copenhagen but living in berlin, agnes is influenced by roy orbison, sonic youth and eric satie. she is often compared to joanna newsom, ane brun, st vincent and ricki lee jones. she manages to inject energy and shading into the songs with the use of piano and strings as her primary means. 'on powdered ground' uses the bare minimum and still manages to sound full and when she begins to harmonises with herself it becomes almost rich whilst still retaining an air of sparseness. one of the many highlights is a cover of john cale's '(i keep a) close watch' which builds slowly swells for the chorus and has an effortless weightless elegance that contrasts with the metronomic piano. she declares herself as a devotee of roy orbison and whilst it isn't obvious there is some similarity in the simplicity of the songs and 'over the hill' has the sort of structure and sentiment that you can imagine him mesmerising his audience with. the simplicity and clarity of these songs turns them into mini soundtracks.

Agnes Obel (born 28 October 1980 in Copenhagen, Denmark) is a Danish musician, songwriter and singer based in Berlin, Germany, where she had lived since 2006.
Born Agnes Caroline Thaarup Obel, she is the scion of a musician's family in Copenhagen. She learned to play the piano at a very young age. Her mother used to play Bartók and Chopin at the piano. At the age of seven, Agnes Obel played in a little band where she used to sing and play bass guitar. The group appeared in a festival and even recorded some titles. During her childhood, Agnes Obel found inspiration in the work of Jan Johansson. His European folk tunes, done in a jazzy style, are a major influence on Obel's music. She attended high school at Det Frie Gymnasium and attended Roskilde University.
Later, and with the help of Danish musician and producer Elton Theander, Obel founded the Copenhagen based band Sohio. After few years with this band, Obel debuted as a singer-songwriter in her own right and under her own name, with her debut album Philharmonics (October 2010).
Influenced by artists such as Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey and also by the French composers Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Eric Satie, more albums followed: Aventine (2013), Citizen of Glass (2016), Myopia (2020) and The Meaning of Flowers (2026).
Obel lives in Berlin, Germany, with her long-time partner and husband Alex Brüel Flagstad, a photographer and animation artist who filmed and directed several of Obel's music videos, notably those for 'Riverside', 'Dorian', 'The Curse' and 'Aventine'.
