ABBA were a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They became one of the most internationally recognized and commercially successful music groups of the late 20th century.
The group achieved global attention after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 for Sweden with the song "Waterloo". During the peak of their success, ABBA consisted of two married couples: Fältskog and Ulvaeus, and Lyngstad and Andersson. Both marriages later ended, and the changes in the members’ personal lives were reflected in the group’s later music, which increasingly incorporated emotional and introspective themes. ABBA disbanded in December 1982. Andersson and Ulvaeus continued to work together as composers for stage and film, while Fältskog and Lyngstad pursued individual solo careers. In 1992, the compilation album "ABBA Gold" was released and became a major worldwide commercial success. Their music was later adapted into "Mamma Mia!", a stage musical that premiered in 1999 and toured internationally. A film adaptation, "Mamma Mia!", was released in 2008 and became a major box-office success, followed by a sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", in 2018.
ABBA have sold an estimated 150 million records worldwide, placing them among the best-selling music artists in history. They were the first group from a non-English-speaking country to achieve sustained success in major English-speaking markets, including the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Canada. They achieved eight consecutive number-one albums in the United Kingdom and also recorded a Spanish-language compilation that broadened their popularity in Latin America. ABBA have received numerous honors, including induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Their song "Dancing Queen" was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015, and the album "Arrival" (1976) was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry in 2024.
The group reunited in the late 2010s to participate in a digital avatar concert project. New music followed, and "Voyage", their first studio album in four decades, was released on 5 November 2021. ABBA Voyage, a concert residency featuring motion-captured digital avatars of the group, opened in London in May 2022.
