STYLE:
R&B / Soul /
FORMAT:
Vinyl record
DESCRIPTION:
2x12" Soul & R& B Classic From 1994 Reissued - Recorded in Chicago from January 1993, and entirely written and produced by the now disgraced hip-hop singer come predator R. Kelly - the sole credit by design, to keep the publishing clean - and released on Blackground/Jive when Aaliyah was 15. The context is now impossible to separate from the record, and nobody credible is trying: regardless, what remains is a document of early 90s new jack swing, mid popular insurgence: 'Back & Forth' topped the R&B chart for three weeks, and the Isley Brothers cover 'At Your Best (You Are Love)' reached number six. Aaliyah left Jive immediately after, signed to Atlantic, and went on to work with Timbaland and Missy Elliott.

Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model. She was recognized for her contributions to contemporary R&B, pop, and hip hop, earning titles such as the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop". Her awards and nominations include three American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and five Grammy Award nominations. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah first gained public attention at age 10 by appearing on the television show "Star Search" and performing in concert with Gladys Knight. At age 12, she signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who served as her mentor and the primary producer and songwriter for her debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number" (1994). The album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Its lead single, "Back & Forth", reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Following allegations concerning an illegal marriage with Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic Records. For her second album, "One in a Million" (1996), Aaliyah collaborated with producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott. The album sold three million copies in the United States and over eight million copies worldwide. She made her acting debut in the action film "Romeo Must Die", whose soundtrack included the single "Try Again", the first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 solely through airplay. She later starred in "Queen of the Damned" (2002; released posthumously) and released her third studio album, "Aaliyah" (2001), which topped the Billboard 200. Singles from the album included "We Need a Resolution", "Rock the Boat", and "More Than a Woman". Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, at the age of 22, when the overloaded aircraft she was traveling in crashed shortly after takeoff, killing her and eight others on board. Investigations revealed the pilot had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system and was not qualified to operate the aircraft. Aaliyah’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the aircraft’s operator, which was settled out of court. Her music has continued to achieve commercial success posthumously, including the compilation albums "I Care 4 U" (2002) and "Ultimate Aaliyah" (2005). She sold 8.1 million albums in the United States and an estimated 24 to 32 million albums worldwide.
