21 Savage’s third solo album, American Dream, begins with his mother, Heather Joseph, describing her family’s emigration from Britain to America during his childhood. “Every path that I walked was for my son,” she tells us. (Big Rube of Dungeon Family fame penned her introduction.) It’s a concept many others have used before, most famously by Jay-Z and his mother Gloria Carter on “December 4th” from 2003’s The Black Album. But longtime fans worried about the Atlanta rapper veering into maudlin self-aggrandisement shouldn’t worry. “Memories in my head, God talking to me/I know Satan in my head but God walking with me,” he raps on the next track, “All of Me.” But he hastens to add, “Bulletproof my cars/Meet a homebody, fuck it, kill him in his yard.”

By now, it’s clear that there’s a stark difference between 21 Savage the wealthy musician, father of three children, and humanitarian known for his charitable works; and 21 Savage the avatar, whose deadpan boasts about murdering rivals, stunting on X bitches, and bullying snitches has thrilled listeners for nearly a decade. His assertion that these tales are informed by youthful, real-life adventures in the streets may contribute to their verisimilitude, but it doesn’t address the dissonance between his two personas, and whether his audience would accept him any other way. Jay-Z thrived in an era when rappers who hit gold were encouraged to evolve from their hustler origins and embrace less fraught themes like partying in clubs, buying expensive toys, and building successful businesses. Today, it seems artists who attempt to break character — see Gucci Mane, Killer Mike, T.I., and other rehabilitated trappers — risk losing hardcore fans turned off by anything that smacks of pop compromise.

Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph (born 22 October 1992), known professionally as 21 Savage, is a British-born rapper based in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in London and raised in the United States, he began his recording career in 2013 and released three independent mixtapes that received regional attention. His first major commercial breakthrough came with the collaborative extended play "Savage Mode" (2016), recorded with producer Metro Boomin, which peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200. The EP produced the singles "X" (featuring Future) and "No Heart", both of which reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Later in 2016, he gained further recognition through a guest appearance on Drake’s single "Sneakin'". He signed a recording contract with Epic Records in January 2017. 21 Savage released his debut studio album, "Issa Album", in 2017, where it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Bank Account", reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, he released the collaborative album "Without Warning" with Metro Boomin and rapper Offset, and appeared as a featured artist on Post Malone’s single "Rockstar", which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and received nominations for Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. His second studio album, "I Am > I Was" (2018), became his first release to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the single "A Lot" (featuring J. Cole), which won Best Rap Song at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. In 2020, he and Metro Boomin released "Savage Mode II", a sequel to their earlier EP, which also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced the top-ten singles "Runnin" and "Mr. Right Now" (featuring Drake). He later appeared on Drake’s 2022 single "Jimmy Cooks", which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That year, he and Drake released the collaborative album "Her Loss", which also reached number one on the Billboard 200. His third studio album, "American Dream" (2024), became his fourth consecutive chart-topping project and included the top-ten singles "Redrum" and "Née-Nah". In February 2019, 21 Savage was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which revealed that he was a British citizen who had entered the United States in July 2005 and overstayed a visa that expired in 2006. He was released on bond later that month while deportation proceedings were pending, and the case was subsequently postponed indefinitely. In 2023, he became a lawful permanent resident of the United States and was granted a green card.
