Spax (born March 28, 1973 in Rheine as Rafael Szulc-Vollmann) is a German rapper known for his work in freestyle and conscious rap. He gained early recognition as a freestyle specialist on hip-hop jams and has been active in both musical and educational projects throughout his career.
Spax grew up in Schüttorf, Grafschaft Bentheim. In 1994, he met freestyle rapper MC Rene during a performance on the VIVA hip-hop show Freestyle. Shortly after, he performed with Rene and DJ Mirko Machine as a team, touring in support of Rene’s solo debut "Renevolution" and releasing the tape "Flowdiamonds 95." The collaboration ended after several years, with Spax and Mirko Machine continuing as a duo. In the same year, Spax contributed the German-language song "Das Jazzhaus" to the first Jazzkantine album, performing at that time with Topze as part of the crew U-Men.
Spax signed his first record deal in 1996 with Motor Music, releasing his debut album "Privat (style fetisch)" in 1998, followed by "Alles Relativ" in 2000. He has expressed a preference for freestyle rap and creating original content over performing pre-written songs. In 2001, he recorded "Blink Blink" with LL Cool J in Berlin for Def Jam Germany and performed with him at the HipHop Open in Stuttgart. His third album "Engel und Ratten" was released in 2003 by Universal Music.
Beyond music, Spax has contributed to theater and opera. In 2003, he co-directed Wedekind’s "Frühlings Erwachen" at Landesbühne Hannover and later collaborated with the Staatsoper Hannover on "Zeitoper – Aus der Depression," for which he wrote the story, raps, and operatic vocals. In 2005, he worked on the theater project "Faker!" at Theater Reutlingen Die Tonne. He has also acted, appearing in the role of Otto in "Frühlings Erwachen" at Schauspiel Hannover in 2007, and has participated in modern reinterpretations of classical works, such as Mozart’s "Entführung aus dem Serail," through youth workshops.
Spax has continued performing and releasing music in collaboration with various artists. In 2011, he formed the freestyle group F.I.R.S.T. with MC Rene and FlowinImmO and toured with The Silver Delorean. Later that year, he reunited with DJ Mirko Machine as Die Profis, releasing the LP "Zeiten ändern dich nicht immer" and touring. Die Profis released a second album, "Unter dem Radar," in 2015. Collaborating with Brisk Fingaz, Spax released the EPs "Privatvorstellung" (2016) and "Wahrheit" (2017), followed by the album "Diamanten & Pechstein" (2019).
Spax has made television appearances, including a 2012 guest role on the German children’s soap opera "Schloss Einstein," where he played himself. He has been active in educational initiatives, serving as a sponsor for the program Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage at several schools in Hannover and leading projects such as an alphabetization initiative in collaboration with iChance and a musical adaptation of the German constitution with the IGS Badenstedt. He has also contributed to social integration and educational projects, earning recognition from the Deutsch-Türkische Netzwerk and awards such as the ProVisio Prize for the gaming project "Prison Break."
Spax lives in Hannover and continues to work at the intersection of music, education, and cultural projects.
