Roxette is a Swedish pop rock duo originally consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, both of whom were established musicians in Sweden prior to the group’s formation. Fredriksson had released several successful solo albums, while Gessle was known as the lead singer and principal songwriter of Gyllene Tider, which achieved three number-one albums in Sweden. Following advice from EMI executive Rolf Nygren, Fredriksson and Gessle collaborated on the single "Neverending Love", taken from Roxette’s debut album "Pearls of Passion" (1986), which became a hit in Sweden.
The duo achieved international success with the release of "Look Sharp!" in 1988. The album produced two number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "The Look" and "Listen to Your Heart". "It Must Have Been Love", featured on the soundtrack to the 1990 film "Pretty Woman", also reached number one, as did the title track from their third studio album "Joyride" (1991). That album became Roxette’s most commercially successful release, selling approximately eleven million copies worldwide, and they performed to more than 1.5 million people during the "Join the Joyride! Tour". Subsequent releases included "Tourism" (1992), "Crash! Boom! Bang!" (1994), and the compilation "Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!" (1995), each of which sold at least five million copies globally.
"Have a Nice Day" (1999) and "Room Service" (2001) received numerous gold and platinum certifications in Europe and Latin America. In 2002, Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour, leading to an extended hiatus during which both members pursued solo work and Gessle reunited with Gyllene Tider. Roxette resumed activity in 2009 with a world tour lasting until 2016 and released the albums "Charm School", "Travelling", and "Good Karma" during this period. Fredriksson retired from touring in 2016 because of health issues and died on 9 December 2019 due to complications related to cancer.
Roxette is one of Sweden’s best-selling musical acts, second in overall sales to ABBA. They have sold an estimated 75 to 80 million records worldwide and rank among the most highly certified artists in Germany, with sales approaching six million units. The duo achieved nineteen top-40 hits in the United Kingdom, where the British Phonographic Industry certified their releases for more than three million units, and they scored four number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, with certifications exceeding three million units from the Recording Industry Association of America. Since 2021, Gessle has released music under the name PG Roxette; the debut album "Pop-Up Dynamo!" was issued in 2022. In 2024, he announced a tour using the Roxette name, with Lena Philipsson performing as vocalist.
