Marillion are a British neo-progressive rock band formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in 1979. They emerged from the post-punk music scene in Britain and developed a style bridging punk rock and classic progressive rock, becoming one of the most commercially successful neo-prog bands of the 1980s.
The band released their debut single, "Market Square Heroes", in 1982, followed by their first studio album, "Script for a Jester's Tear", in 1983. They have released a total of 20 studio albums. Between 1983 and 1994, Marillion achieved eight Top 10 albums in the UK, including the No. 1 album "Misplaced Childhood" (1985). "Misplaced Childhood" produced the UK Top 10 singles "Kayleigh" (No. 2) and "Lavender" (No. 5). Their 1987 album "Clutching at Straws" included the UK Top 10 single "Incommunicado" (No. 6) and was the final studio album featuring original lead singer Fish, who left for a solo career in late 1988. During the Fish era, the band scored 11 Top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart, with "Kayleigh" also appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
In early 1989, Steve Hogarth joined Marillion as the new lead singer. Their first album with Hogarth, "Seasons End", reached the UK Top 10, and subsequent albums continued to chart well until the band left EMI Records following the 1996 live album "Made Again". Since then, Marillion’s mainstream popularity declined, although they experienced a resurgence in the mid- to late-2000s. With Hogarth, they achieved 12 additional UK Top 40 singles, including "You're Gone" (2004) from the album "Marbles", which reached No. 7 and became their biggest hit of the Hogarth era. Their 2016 album "Fuck Everyone and Run (F E A R)" returned them to the UK Albums Chart Top 10 for the first time since 1994’s "Brave". Their most recent album, "An Hour Before It's Dark" (2022), reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, the highest since "Clutching at Straws" in 1987. Marillion continue to tour internationally and were ranked 38th in Classic Rock’s "50 Best Live Acts of All Time" in 2008.
Despite limited mainstream media coverage and an unfashionable status in the British music industry, Marillion have maintained a loyal international fanbase. The band is recognized as a pioneer in fan-funded music and crowdfunding and has sold over 15 million albums worldwide.
