H-Town is an American R&B vocal group from Houston, Texas, formed in 1990 by brothers Keven "Dino" Conner (1974–2003) and Solomon "Shazam" Conner, along with their friend Darryl "G.I." Jackson. The group grew up in Houston's 3rd Ward neighborhood and began performing together while attending Jack Yates High School. Originally known as "The Gents," they recorded a locally released album, "It's No Dream," with producer Phil Blackmon, featuring the ballad "A Time for Us." After sending a demo tape to Luther "Luke" Campbell of Luke Records, the group was signed to the label, with Bishop "Stick" Burrell producing and positioning Dino Conner as the lead singer. The name "H-Town" was adopted from the nickname for Houston. H-Town's debut album, "Fever for Da Flavor," was released on April 15, 1993, and included the single "Knockin' Da Boots," which became the group's signature song, reaching number one on the US R&B chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up single, "Lick U Up," peaked at number 21. The group participated in the 1993 Coca-Cola Summer Fest tour alongside Shai, SWV, Jade, Naughty by Nature, Silk, and LL Cool J. In 1994, H-Town won the Soul Train Music Award for Best New Artist and contributed the single "Part Time Lover" to the "Above the Rim" soundtrack, which reached number nine on the R&B chart. That same year, the group joined Black Men United, collaborating with artists including Silk, Portrait, and Boyz II Men on the single "U Will Know" for the "Jason's Lyric" soundtrack. H-Town's second album, "Beggin' After Dark," was released on November 8, 1994. The album featured the single "Emotions," which reached number 11 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 51 on the Hot 100. Other tracks included "Back Seat (Wit No Sheets)," "Full Time," "One Night Gigolo," "Tumble & Rumble," "Buss One" featuring Papa Reu, and "Baby I Love Ya" featuring Roger Troutman. The group recorded a cover of The Persuaders' "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate" with Shirley Murdock for the 1996 film of the same name, which peaked at number 37 on the Hot 100. H-Town's third album, "Ladies Edition, Woman's World," was released on October 28, 1997. The album addressed themes of relationships, personal accountability, and women's issues, with tracks such as "Don't Sleep on the Female," "Julie Rain," and "Jezebel." The single "They Like It Slow" reached number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was dedicated to Nicole Brown Simpson and included a list of twenty national women's helplines in the liner notes. On January 28, 2003, Dino Conner and his girlfriend were killed in an automobile accident. Following his death, H-Town self-released the album "Imitations of Life" in 2004. The surviving members have continued to record and tour, including a 2010 collaboration with Pretty Ricky and Jodeci on the single "Knockin' Your Heels."
