Gitte Hænning (born 29 June 1946) is a Danish singer and film actress who became a child star in the 1950s. She is primarily known mononymously in Europe and moved to Sweden in 1958. Her first Swedish hit was "Tror du jag ljuger" in 1961. As a teenager, she recorded songs in German, English, Italian, and Danish, including the Italian songs "Amo Johnny," "Parla," "La mela," and "Il ricordo." Gitte achieved five number-one hits across three countries: one in Denmark, two in Sweden, and two in Germany, with her first German number-one single being "Ich will 'nen Cowboy als Mann," which sold 1.05 million copies by mid-1965 and earned her a gold disc.
In 1962, she attempted to represent Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Jeg Snakker med mig Selv" but was disqualified because the composer, Sejr Volmer-Sørensen, had whistled the song publicly. In 1973, she competed for Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Junger Tag" and in 1978 attempted to represent Luxembourg with "Rien qu'une femme," losing to the group Baccara. She also performed in a series of popular films in Germany as part of duets with Rex Gildo under the name 'Gitte & Rex.' During the 1960s, she appeared in several music and drama films and television programs in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.
Gitte was among the most popular Schlager singers of the post-war era and maintained popularity in Germany and Denmark through the 1970s despite the growing influence of American music. She recorded a jazz album with The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band in 1968. Although her singles continued to chart in later decades, they did not match the success of her 1960s releases. In the 1980s, she adopted a more adult-oriented musical style and received awards for her work as a singer and entertainer. While her chart activity ended in the mid-1980s, she has remained an active live performer, with compilation albums and a biographical DVD released in Germany.
From 2004 to 2006, she toured and performed with Scandinavian entertainers Wenche Myhre and Siw Malmkvist, with the live CD recording of their show entering the German charts. In 2010, she released a new CD, which also charted in Germany. Her first chart entry was in Sweden in 1960, and her most recent was in Germany in 2010.
