ESA (Electronic Substance Abuse) is an act created by Jamie Blacker in 2003. Blacker, originally from the English underground black metal and death metal scene, had been releasing demo's for quite a while. After discovering acts like Converter and Sonar, Blacker departed metal and went into harsh electronic music, releasing two demo's; Starving The Mind in 2003 and Stream Of Consciousness in 2004.
After playing live with bands as Mimetic and Scrap.edx, ESA got signed up with Hive Records. In 2006 his debut album Devotion, Discipline, And Denial was released through this label, which also released How Pure Would Your Utopia Be? in 2008. That same year saw another album from ESA; The Sea & The Silence on Tympanik Audio. Four years later, in 2012, ESA released his next album on Tympanik Audio as well; Themes of Carnal Empowerment, Pt. 1: Lust.
