Dismember is a Swedish death metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1988. They are considered pioneers of Swedish death metal and are recognized as part of the country’s "big four" alongside Entombed, Grave, and Unleashed. The band split up in 2011 but reunited in 2019. Dismember released their debut album, "Like an Ever Flowing Stream", in 1991, which became influential in the Swedish death metal scene. The track "Skin Her Alive" sparked controversy in the United Kingdom, leading to an obscenity charge that the band successfully defended. In 1992, they released the "Pieces" EP, followed by their second album, "Indecent & Obscene" (1993), which included the song "Dreaming in Red" and a music video featured on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. In the mid-1990s, Dismember incorporated more melodic elements into their sound with the album "Massive Killing Capacity" (1995). They returned to a heavier style with the EP "Misanthropic" and the album "Death Metal" in 1997, though the latter saw lower sales. Their final album for Nuclear Blast was "Hate Campaign" (2000). The band signed with Karmageddon Records in 2003 and released "Where Ironcrosses Grow" (2004), before moving to Regain Records in 2005, which reissued their earlier albums. In 2006, they released "The God That Never Was" and toured Europe, including the Masters of Death tour alongside Grave, Unleashed, Entombed, and Exterminator. After drummer Fred Estby left in 2007, citing family commitments, the band released their self-titled eighth album, "Dismember", in 2008. They also released the two-disc DVD "Under Blood Red Skies" in 2009, featuring live performances and a documentary. Dismember officially disbanded in 2011 but reunited in 2019 with the original lineup for the Scandinavia Deathfest. Since reuniting, the band has performed selective live shows while limiting tours to short runs due to members’ personal commitments. As of 2026, no new studio album has been released, although the band has material written, with progress hindered by members living in different countries. Their back catalog has been reissued digitally through Nuclear Blast Records.
