1. Cog is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1998. The group consisted of Flynn Gower (lead guitar, lead vocals), Lucius Borich (drums, samples, backing vocals), and Luke Gower (bass guitar, backing vocals). Flynn Gower and Borich had been friends since their school years and began collaborating musically before forming Cog.
Prior to the band’s formation, Borich performed with Juice, while Flynn Gower led a metal band called The Hanging Tree. After various changes and a period of Borich working in the United States as a session drummer, the two reunited and established Cog. Early recordings for what would become the EPs "Just Visiting Part One" and "Just Visiting Part Two" were completed in 1998, with vocals added later. Luke Gower subsequently joined to complete the live line-up.
Cog developed a reputation through live performances in Sydney, including a residency at the Excelsior Hotel. The band signed with Little Samurai Records and released "Just Visiting Part One" in 2002, followed by "Just Visiting Part Two" later that year. Both releases remained on the ARIA Heavy Rock/Metal charts for extended periods. Around this time, Cog supported System of a Down and gained wider recognition, including awards for live performance.
In 2005, Cog released their debut album "The New Normal", produced by Sylvia Massy, known for her work with System of a Down and Tool. The album reached number 19 on the ARIA Albums Chart and number one on the AIR chart. The band toured extensively in Australia and New Zealand, performing with acts such as Karnivool, Shihad, and Grinspoon, and appearing at festivals including Big Day Out.
The second album, "Sharing Space", was released in 2008 and reached number two on the ARIA Albums Chart, later receiving Gold certification. Its lead single "What If" charted in Australia. Cog continued touring domestically and internationally, including performances in the United Kingdom.
The band later reissued their early EP material as the album "Just Visiting". They also released the DVD "The Sound of Three: 12 Years With You" in 2010, which reached number one on the Australian DVD chart. Cog’s musical style has been described as progressive rock and alternative metal, with influences including Tool, Isis, Nina Simone, Bob Marley, Leftfield, and Helmet.
