Boston is an American rock band formed in 1975 in Boston, Massachusetts, by songwriter and composer Tom Scholz. The band’s core members included multi-instrumentalist Scholz and lead vocalist Brad Delp, who were the only constant members from 1975 to 1990 and again from 1994 until Delp’s death in 2007. Other musicians have participated at various times throughout the band’s history.
Boston experienced significant commercial success during the 1970s and 1980s. Their 1976 self-titled debut album, "Boston", is among the best-selling albums by an American rock band and was certified 17× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America as of 2025. The band’s best-known songs include "More Than a Feeling", "Peace of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time", "Rock and Roll Band", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Hitch a Ride", "Party", "Amanda", and "Feelin' Satisfied". The group has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including over 31 million in the United States. Approximately 17 million of these sales were attributed to the debut album, while their second studio album, "Don't Look Back" (1978), sold about seven million copies in the United States.
Altogether, Boston has released six studio albums over a career spanning more than five decades. Their recorded output became less frequent after the 1980s, with "Third Stage" (1986), "Walk On" (1994), and "Corporate America" (2002) released at roughly eight-year intervals, followed eleven years later by "Life, Love & Hope" (2013). Despite limited studio releases in recent decades, the band has continued to perform live and has periodically indicated the possibility of a seventh studio album. Boston was ranked the 63rd-best hard rock artist by VH1.
Following Delp’s death in 2007, several vocalists have performed with the band, including Michael Sweet of Stryper. Since 2007, Tommy DeCarlo has served as the group’s lead singer. Other members have included guitarist Gary Pihl, bassist Tracy Ferrie, drummer Jeff Neal, and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Beth Cohen.
