Annihilator is a Canadian thrash metal band founded in Ottawa in 1984 by Jeff Waters. Waters has been the band’s only constant member and has served as guitarist, bandleader, primary songwriter, producer, engineer, and at times bassist and vocalist. Annihilator has released seventeen studio albums and has experienced numerous lineup changes, with Waters frequently recruiting touring and session musicians. Alongside Sacrifice, Voivod, and Razor, the band has been described as part of the “Big Four” of Canadian thrash metal. They are also commonly associated with the second wave of thrash metal bands that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Annihilator is regarded as the highest-selling Canadian heavy metal band, although the majority of its sales have occurred outside Canada. The band’s first two studio albums, "Alice in Hell" (1989) and "Never, Neverland" (1990), are frequently cited as influential releases within Canadian metal. Several later albums, including their third release and only major-label album "Set the World on Fire" (1993), also received positive critical attention and achieved commercial success in Europe and Japan. Their most recent studio album of original material, "Ballistic, Sadistic", was released in 2020.
