US rapper Black Krays alter ego on the song Counting Sad Faces * Boys Don't Cry are a British studio band who had one hit in the United States, "I Wanna Be a Cowboy", which peaked at #12 in 1986. the band was formed by maison rouge studio boss Nick Richards, in 1983. Boys Don't Cry were discovered by Paul Oakenfold, who was a talent scout for Profile Records in London in the mid-80's. The record was licensed by Profile Records in 1985, which was also Run DMC's record label at that time. I Wanna Be a Cowboy became the first indie single to chart at Billboard for 17 years. The name Boys Don't Cry was borrowed by the producers of the motion picture of the same name. The song has been described as the perfect musical realization of a spaghetti western movie. "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" was Madonna's favorite song of 1986. The song "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" hit no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985-1986, and was R&R No. 8. The song was also a top 4 hit in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Japan and South Africa. The band consisted of Brian Chatton who played keyboards; he has collaborated with Phil Collins, Meat Loaf, The Hollies, Flaming Youth, Jon Anderson of Yes, Tony Kaye of Yes, Sheena Easton, N'Sync and others. Jeff Seopardi on drums, has played with Paul Carrack and Modern English. Nico Ramsden on guitar has played with The Proclaimers, Mike Oldfield and Rick Wakeman. Nick Richards featured on vocals; and Mark Smith on bass; Mark played with The Waterboys. After a brief stint with Atlantic records for the release of the second album, Who The Am Dam Do You Think We Am, the band went there separate ways in 1990. Mark Smith passed away October 30, 2009. He was just 49. In 2008, Microhits released an anthology Boys Don't Cry album for download only titled White Punks On Rap 1983-1997. It contains 30 songs, most of which were not previously released. In 2009, Richards, his son James and Brian Chatton put together a new Boys Don't Cry album titled I Was Just Thinking About Sex at the Time. It is the first album for 22 years. The first single Don't Call Me a Coutry Singer peaked at # 7 on the FMQB AC chart this summer, and has been nominated for a Grammy. The album has been produced by Anthony J Resta and will be released in early 2010. Richards, meanwhile, has put a new live line up together in readiness for an eighties retro tour for Red Entertainment. The new lineup features Mike Licata on drums,Aaron McLain and James Richards on guitars, Mikey Torres on bass, make up the band.
