After a session together in a Bergen studio 20 years ago which sadly only resulted in a distorted tape, Bjørn Torske and Prins Thomas finally get back together to make music.
Bjørn Torske is a figurehead and grand old man of the electronic music scene in Norway, inspiring and laying the foundation for producers like Prins Thomas, Lindstrom and Todd Terje.
Bjørn and Thomas' relationship goes back to the mid 90's when they first bonded over a shared passion for oddball disco, dub and detroit techno. This album is in many ways full circle with Bjorn and Thomas making music together for the first time.
Square One is a collection of loose, abstract and freeform avant-disco jams, parallel world-disco maybe Whatever you call it, this album is a labour of love. A sound they both have traveled towards for all these years. And here they finally are, at square one.

Norway has always had an unusual musical climate. At one end of its spectrum is black metal; at the other, the sort of zero-gravity electronica that seems tailor-made for Cafe del Mar compilations. Bjorn Torske falls towards the latter camp - his remix of Royksopp’s Eple brought him brief recognition in 2001 - but he’s clearly also a fan of weirder sounds: The Residents and 23 Skidoo. Feil Knapp dances between genres so brilliantly that by the time you get to Kapteinens Skjegg, a mix of dark, digital dub and Viking horns, you won’t know whether you’re in Babylon or Valhalla. Prins Thomas is responsible for a swag of the eclectic ‘space-disco’ sounds emanating from his homeland, Norway.
Prins Thomas first poked his head up in dance circles in 2003, joining forces with pal Lindstrøm to bring a new kind of vibe to disco circles, one that was as in love with instrumental rock and noodly seventies jazz as dusty old disco gems. Peer over the decks at their early gigs and it appeared that Prins was the DJ and Lindstrøm was the live act, but recently Prins has struck out on his own, producing for labels such as Kompakt, Mindless Boogie and his own imprint Full Pupp (Check his 'Ferrara' twelve for the dirtiest bass action of 2006).
As a DJ, Prins brings a bit of a live vibe to his sets, as evidenced by his debut mix CD 'Cosmo Galactic Prism' this summer, which took the prize for the most super-eclectic tracklist of the year, finding room for Hawkwind, Joe Meek and even Bob James amid the beats. Likewise for his RA Podcast, Prins spins a set made up of a whole lot of names we haven't quite heard of, and some we have, but the rarity of the cuts is part of the pleasure. As is the length. "It's a 'set' from A-Z, done as compressed and short as I can," explains Prins. "It would be different if I was happy doing strictly minimal sets or something but that's not where I'm from..."
